A classic Canadian dessert: a light cake topped with a rich maple sauce.

In a large bowl, with an electric mixer, cream the butter and sugar until the mixture is light.

Add eggs and vanilla and mix.

In another bowl, whisk flour and baking powder.

Alternate adding the flour mixture and milk to the butter mixture.

Pour the batter into a greased 13 inch by 9 inch pan.

Prepare maple sauce by combining maple syrup, brown sugar, cream and butter in a large saucepan and bringing to a boil, stirring constantly.

Reduce heat and simmer gently for 2 minutes or until the sauce has reduced slightly.

Pour the sauce gently over the cake.

Bake at 325 F (160 C) for about 35 minutes or until the cake is light brown and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
