Heat the milk until lukewarm, then dissolve the yeast.

Add sugar, cardamom, vanilla, and about two-thirds of the flour; mix to form a rough dough.

Gradually add the rest of the flour while kneading by hand or with a mixer until the dough is smooth and not too sticky; when a nice ball forms, add the softened butter and knead for about ten minutes.

Roll the dough into a cylinder and cut into six equal pieces; roll each into a round bun and place in a greased muffin tin. Cover and let rise until doubled in size, about one hour.
